President Chen Addresses a Group of Orthopedists Attending an Asia-Pacific Conference on the Knee
2002-02-28

Taipei, Feb. 28 (CNA) Asian people who often kneel to practice their religion are susceptible to knee injuries and need special medical care, President Chen Shui-bian told a group of medical experts Thursday.

Speaking at a dinner given to a group of orthopedists attending an Asia-Pacific conference on the knee, the president described the knee as "one of the most important joints in the human body." He noted that "it bears the whole weight of the body and is subject to tremendous force during vigorous activity."

Owing to the efforts of the orthopedists and the advancements in medical technology, the president said, it is now possible to replace the knee with an artificial one, which greatly improves the mobility of patients with damaged knees.

In addition to welcoming the knee specialists to Taiwan, the president urged his audience to buy Taiwan's cheap information products and to deepen their understanding of the country's culture by touring the National Palace Museum.
