2022-11-07

On November 7, a delegation led by Prime Minister Terrance Drew of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis arrived in Taiwan at the invitation of our government to begin a four-day state visit. Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said that President Tsai Ing-wen extends a sincere welcome to Prime Minister Drew and his delegation on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.

Spokesperson Chang said that on the morning of November 8, President Tsai will officially welcome the visiting delegation with military honors, before holding an in-depth exchange of views on issues of mutual concern. The president will then host a state banquet at the Presidential Office for the delegation at noon.

Noting that this is Prime Minister Drew's first visit to Taiwan since taking office this past August, Spokesperson Chang said that the delegation includes a number of key cabinet members and local leaders from St. Christopher and Nevis, such as Minister of Foreign Affairs Denzil Douglas, Nevis Premier Mark Brantley, Minister of Environment Joyelle Clarke, and Junior Minister for Youth Empowerment and Social Development, Gender Affairs, Aging and Disabilities Isalean Phillip.

Spokesperson Chang said that in the 39 years since we established official diplomatic relations, our countries have enjoyed close cooperation and exchanges in areas including agriculture, medicine and public health, renewable energy, and information and communications technology. He observed that in recent years, Prime Minister Drew has spoken out numerous times at the UN General Assembly and other important international venues in vigorous support of Taiwan's participation in international organizations, and noted our countries' extensive cooperation and solid friendship.

Calling St. Christopher and Nevis an important ally of Taiwan in Latin America and the Caribbean, Spokesperson Chang expressed hope that this visit by Prime Minister Drew and his delegation will promote enduring cooperation and friendship between our countries as we work together to contribute to global democratic resilience, prosperity, and development.
