2002-01-17

Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian Thursday met with the ROC archery team that competed in the 12th Asian Archery Championship held in Hong Kong in mid-December. The delegation brought home five gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

The president lauded the team for its outstanding performance and noted that archery is one of the world's most ancient sports, through which an archer can show his calm and steady temper.

Because of the team's impressive performance, Chen said, the sport in Taiwan has a brighter future and he also expressed confidence that ROC archers will perform even better at the 2002 Asian Games to be held in South Korea.

Saying that "athletic proficiency reflects the power of a country," Chen pointed out that Taiwan's athletes have performed well in international sporting events over the past year, thereby increasing the country's profile in the international community.
