Vice President Annette Lu this afternoon attended the 74th anniversary celebrations of the National Cheng Kung University and the 40th anniversary of founding of the Department of Engineering Science. The Vice President also gave a speech during the celebration events.
Vice President Lu affirmed the progress made by the National Cheng Kung University and said hardware facilities and talent development have always been the major concerns of Taiwan's education system. In addition to the Vice President and her entourage, several South Korean visitors, including a play writer of a popular South Korean TV series, also went with the Vice President to the celebration events. The South Korean guests gained warm welcome from the students.
The Vice President gave a speech with the topic of the "Heaviness and the Lightness of Life," noting that a person's lifetime is full of stories and all kinds of knowledge. It is meanwhile filled with challenges and difficulties. While people cannot choose their own parents, they do have the right to decide whether they are going to be the slave or master of their own destinies. This is what she called the "Heaviness and the Lightness of Life."
Vice President Lu advised that students think about the future of Taiwan apart from their own studies and encouraged young people to protect and to make better the democracy that Taiwan already has as it is the achievement of all the people on the island. The Vice President insisted that people in the country hold on to justice and the rule of law and believe that everyone is equal before the law. Governing the country by rule of law has also been the goal of all the people in Taiwan. She told students that Taiwan's future hinges on all the people in the country and so everyone should care more about Taiwan, because the future of Taiwan's people is closely connected to that of the country. She expressed her earnest wishes that students enable themselves to become persons of conscience, love and confidence, so they can speak with conscience, have a love for Taiwan and have confidence in it. The Vice President said Taiwan's future would be bright and full of hope, if they aim to become masters of their own as well as masters of Taiwan.
