Vice President Lu Speaks at a News Briefing on Activities to Mark the Island's WTO Accession
2001-12-31

Taipei, Dec.31 (CNA) On the eve of Taiwan's entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Vice President Annette Lu called on mainland China Monday to shed the outdated argument with Taiwan over whether the two sides should reunite or whether there is an agreement on the meaning of "one China."

Lu said the WTO membership of Taiwan and the mainland will usher in a new era of ties between the two sides in the fields of investment and services, which she claimed will "negate" the disputes.

Speaking at a news briefing on activities to mark the island's WTO accession, Lu said the existence of the so-called "1992 consensus" on "one China" is doubtful and that there is no point in arguing about it once both sides become equal WTO members.

Rather, Lu said, the mainland should treat Taiwan as an equal member of the WTO, while Taiwan should redefine its role after its accession to WTO takes effect.

Without such redefinition, Lu claimed, the island will be in danger of being incorporated into mainland China.

At the news conference, she also announced that "Taiwan Heart" -- a group aimed at developing "Taiwan's value" -- will be set up Tuesday to coincide with the island's WTO accession.

To mark the island's WTO membership and the group's inauguration, she went on, the group will invite 100 scholars and experts from Taipei and 100 from Kaohsiung to travel on special trains to meet in the central city of Taichung for a discussion on the impact of WTO membership.
