Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA) Vice President Lu Hsiu-lien departed for Gambia Wednesday night to attend the inauguration of re-elected Gambian President Yahya Jammeh Dec. 21 on behalf of President Chen Shui-bian.
President Chen offered his personal felicitations to Jammeh on Oct. 22 upon the re-election of the Gambian president, who garnered 52.96 percent of the vote.
During her stay in Gambia, Lu is expected to hold talks with Gambian leaders as well as inspect the ROC Embassy and agricultural projects being implemented under cooperation agreements between the two countries, according to ministry officials.
Lu is also returning the invitation to visit the country by Gambian Vice President Isatou Njie-Saidy, who was one of the four female vice presidents of countries that are diplomatic allies of the ROC to travel to Taiwan to attend the inauguration of President Chen and Vice President Lu on May 20, 2000.
