Taipei, Dec. 15 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Saturday called for speedy readjustment in the structure of the domestic agricultural sector to help alleviate the impact of Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In an address at the opening of a meeting of 21 agricultural organizations in Taiwan held at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in the southernmost county of Pingtung, Chen said the agricultural sector should promote the specialties of local farm products and strengthen the marketing division between these and imported products as tactics for sharpening the competitive edge of domestic produce and goods.
Chen urged the agricultural sector to seek evolution in its development to allow Taiwan agriculture to become an industry "rich in technological, cultural, ecological and leisure comforts."
