President Chen Receives Young Chinese Business Leaders from Taiwan and Overseas
2001-12-14

Taipei, Dec. 13 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that the government is confident in its ability to promote the information-based economy and integrate economic development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chen made the remarks at a reception for young Chinese business leaders from Taiwan and overseas.

The president lauded the young business leaders for creating unlimited possibilities from the most inferior conditions, which he termed the "spirit of Taiwan's sons."

He further said that entrepreneurship is Taiwan's spirit and that the future of Taiwan hinges upon it. Noting that Taiwan's small- and medium-sized enterprises created an economic miracle in the past, the nation in future will have to rely on knowledge, technology and creativity if it wants to continue to enjoy a competitive edge on the world stage.

He stressed that the present time is crucial and that the key to its success will be the integration of the government and private sectors. He said that the government should allow the nation's entrepreneurs to make the best use of their potential and create a sound investment environment.

He reiterated that the government will implement the conclusions reached at the Economic Development Advisory Conference in August and listen to private entrepreneurs.

The president also spoke of the just-concluded legislative and county and city chief elections, saying that the government is not elated by its election victory, but in fact is more humble and more prepared to listen to the voice of the grassroots and think about the future of the country.

Chen reiterated that he will dedicate himself to the stability of the political situation and to economic development, and that he will try to improve cross-strait relations with sincerity, creativity and wisdom.
