Vice President Lu Participates in Global Peace rally
2001-08-15

Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu urged Beijing's leaders to react in kind to the "peace-loving people of Taiwan" at a Wednesday night rally called to mark the end of World War Two.

Speaking at the Evening for Global Peace rally, staged in the plaza of Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Lu said that 56 years ago to the day, Japan capitulated, formally ending World War Two.

The rally, which is a part of Lu's three-day "Voice from Taiwan: Peace and Love" campaign, was organized to mark "the people's desire that there will be no more war, bloodshed and violence."

Lu said the rally is meant to show the world that Taiwan is a peacemaker rather a troublemaker.

Noting that the desire for peace transcends national boundaries, Lu said she hopes the aspirations of the Taiwan people for peace will inspire the people of mainland China and their leaders to pursue peace across the Taiwan Strait.

Stressing that people of integrity will find companions wherever they go, Lu said the Republic of China is an "exemplary state" and will "never be isolated" in the international community despite Beijing's efforts to shut it out of international bodies.
