Vice President Lu Receives Lodi Rinpoche, a Special Envoy of the Dalai Lama to the United States
2001-08-10

Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Republic of China Vice President Annette Lu said Friday that Taiwan's charity organizations will try to render assistance to Tibetans residing in India.

Lu made the remarks while receiving Lodi Rinpoche -- a special envoy of the Dalai Lama to the United States -- and Korchen Rinpoche.

Lu launched a drive to "send love to India" after an earthquake rattled that country in January, causing heavy casualties. Many charity organizations have responded to Lu's appeal and dispatched relief goods to India.

The drive's organizing committee also organized a delegation to make sure the relief goods reached the area of devastation. The delegation also visited Dharamsala, the site of the Dalai Lama's Tibetan government-in-exile, to observe the living conditions of Tibetans in that area, Lu said.

Lu added that she will continue the "send love to India" campaign, as Tibetans there badly need the assistance.

She also invited her guests to take part in her World Peace rally slated for Aug. 15, the anniversary of the end of World War II. Six Nobel Peace Prize winners have been invited to the rally, as well as various other dignitaries.

Lu also asked her guests to convey her personal regards to the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan officials also expressed their heartfelt thanks to the government and people of the Republic of China for the hospitality extended to the Dalai Lama during his last visit to Taiwan.
