Vice President Lu's Remark at a Cocktail Party in Honor of Various International Figures to Attend a "Voice from Taiwan; Peace and Love" Campaign
2001-08-12

Taipei, Aug. 12 (CNA) Republic of China Vice President Annette Lu said Sunday that the peace can be reached only by action, wisdom and determination.

Lu made the remark at a cocktail party in honor of various international figures invited to Taiwan to attend a "Voice from Taiwan; Peace and Love" campaign organized by the vice president for Aug. 15 in commemoration of the end of World War II.

Lu noted that although the United Nations has not admitted Taiwan, the island has opened a door to the world peace and added that it's her belief that the U.N. will "soon open its doors to Taiwan." "Taiwan is not a troublemaker, but a peacemaker," Lu said, adding that Taiwan will demonstrate with action that it is more qualified than some U.N. members to join the organization. "In addition to trying hard to join the U.N., we should let the world know that without Taiwan, it will be a great loss for U.N.," Lu added.

Six Nobel Peace Prize winners, 14 congressmen and parliamentarians from the U.S. and Japan, and the heads of 11 international NGOs, have been invited to participate in the activities.

The event is scheduled to begin Aug. 14, with a world peace forum convened Aug. 15-16, where the participants will discuss matters related to cross-Taiwan Strait relations, security and stability in the Asia Pacific region, experiences in world war and peace activities, crisis and perspectives of peace between the two sides of Taiwan Strait.
