2001-08-07

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) New Gambian Ambassador to the Republic of China Essa Bokar Sey presented his credentials to President Chen Shui-ban Tuesday at the Presidential Office.

After the presentation ceremony, Chen expressed his thanks for Gambian President Yahya Jammeh's concern over the heavy loss of life and damage to crops and property in Taiwan as a result of Typhoon Toraji, as well as for Gambia's firm support of Taiwan's bid for membership in the United Nations, the World Health Organization and other international organizations.

Chen said that the ROC and Gambia enjoy a steady and friendly relationship, as evidenced by Jammeh's three visits to Taiwan and his own trip to the African ally in August last year.

The president added that during his tenure as Taipei mayor, he fostered sisterhood relations between Taipei and the Gambian capital of Banjul and that he and Jammeh are "good friends."
