Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian met Paraguayan Tourism Minister Hugo Jose Galli Romanach and his wife Monday morning to exchange views on matters of mutual concern.
President Chen thanked the president of Paraguay, Luis Gonzalez Macchi, for his cordiality during Chen's visit to Paraguay this May. Chen praised the first lady of Paraguay for refusing to visit mainland China even though Beijing could offer Paraguay financial aid.
Paraguay has had diplomatic relations with the Republic of China for half a century and is the only ROC ally in south America. The two countries should further expand trade and economic exchanges, Chen added.
Romanach said that international tourism can promote cultural exchanges and world peace. He said he hoped Paraguay would be a bridge for Taiwan tofurther its interests in South America. He also said that Taiwan could act as a gateway to southeast Asia for Paraguay.
Romanach said that the "Taiwan experience" was an example from which Paraguay could learn much.
