Nantou County, Central Taiwan, June 23 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday that the government should learn from private enterprises and "join them in doing many things."
Chen made the remarks while attending a double ceremony to celebrate both the Yu Chih primary school's 100th founding anniversary and the inauguration of its new premises following reconstruction made necessary by the Sept. 21, 1999 earthquake.
Chen first presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a monument built to commemorate the post-quake reconstruction of the school.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chen stressed the importance of education and children to the development of the nation, saying that the reconstruction is not only the creation of a physical environment but also the reconstruction of "a room for humane concerns."
In addition to thanking the private enterprises involved for their assistance in the reconstruction, Chen particularly praised their spirit and said the government should learn from private enterprises' efficiency.
