2001-05-25

San Salvador, May 25 (CNA) Visiting Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian attended a summit with leaders of eight ROC allies in Central America Friday morning.

Speaking at the opening of the summit, Chen urged the Central American states to invest in Taiwan and support Taiwan's access to the American Free Trade Area to be formed in 2005.

Chen thanked Taiwan's diplomatic allies in the region for their firm support of the island in the international community and promised to share with them Taiwan's experience in political and economic development. "Today, at the beginning of the new century and in the face of the formation of the 'global village,' we, based on our common desire to safeguard freedom, democracy and human rights, should closely stand together to fight for a better future," Chen said.
