President Chen Addresses the Fifth Annual Ceremony to Honor Models of Mercy and Volunteer Mothers

Taipei, May 5 (CNA) Volunteers are "the locomotive behind Taiwan's development in the 21st century" and the private sector should support the government's efforts to create a harmonious society, President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday. 

Speaking at the fifth annual ceremony to honor 14 "models of mercy" and 25 "volunteer mothers," Chen noted that the United Nation has set 2001 as "international volunteer year" out of recognition that kindness is the driving force that pushes all humans. He further called on people from all walks of life to make moves to extend their love and care. 

Praising the "models of mercy" and the "volunteer mothers" for their kindness, Chen expressed his highest admiration for their good deeds and encouraged them to continue exercising their influence to help improve social morals and build a sound and beautiful society.
