2001-05-01

Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian said Tuesday that he will heed the voices of the people who participated in a large-scale Labor Day parade in Taipei.

He made the remarks while meeting with Robert Steadward, president of the International Olympic Committee for the Handicapped, at the Presidential Office.

Chen said that "a man will have a tomorrow, so long as he is alive; a man will have hope, so long as he refuses to give up." He said that he was deeply moved by a recent news report that a local quadriplegic has authored several best-selling books.

During the talks, Chen expressed hope that Steadward will help Taiwan join the International Olympic Committee for the Handicapped.
