Vice President Lu Meets with Female Centenarians In an Event Marking the Upcoming Mother's Day
2001-04-30

Taipei, April 29 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu suggested Sunday that a tiny island off the coast of southern Taiwan be developed into a resort for the country's increasing population of senior citizens.

In an event marking the upcoming Mother's Day, Lu suggested the government to turn Pingtung County's barren islet of Hsiaoliuchiu into an exclusive resort for pensioners, or a "longevity island."

It would also boost the islet's faltering economy and enhance the lives of Hsialiuchiu's dwellers, said Lu.

The country's first woman vice president met with 21 female centenarians at an event held in their honor at a local hotel Sunday. She presented bouquets to each of them and wished them a happy Mother's Day.
