President Chen Lunches with Longest-Married Couple in Taiwan
2001-04-26

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian made good a promise Thursday by lunching at his office with a couple that claims the longest marriage in Taiwan.

Chen invited Lin Hao and his wife Lin Cheng Chien to lunch at the Presidential Office Thursday to honor a promise he made April 12 when he visited the Chiayi couple who married 80 years ago.

Chen presented them on that occasion with a cash gift of NT$9,999—the pronunciation of which sounds similar to "long, long, long, long" in Chinese—and invited them to visit him someday at his Taipei office.

Describing the lunch as "an honor of a lifetime," Lin said he never imagined that he would one day have lunch with the president at his office. He said he was so excited that he did justice to the meal and would keep as a souvenir a bottle of liquor presented to him by Chen after the lunch. He said he also asked the president to take good care of himself for the sake of the country.

When they posed for a picture, the president asked Lin Cheng Chien if she knew who he is, to which she jokingly replied that she did not and that she knew nobody but her husband.
