Taipei, March 24 (CNA) Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian chaired a high-level meeting Saturday to discuss the normalization of economic and trade relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Presidential Secretary-General You Shi-kun told reporters that two conclusions were reached at the meeting--how to build a framework for normalizing cross-strait economic and trade ties through Taiwan's entry into the World Trade Organization and how to help resolve problems encountered by Taiwan investors in mainland China.

The problems arising from mainland Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen's visit to the United States were not discussed at the meeting, an official with the Presidential Office said.

Participants at the meeting included Vice President Annette Lu, Premier Chang Chun-hsiung, Vice Premier Lai In-jaw, You Shi-kun, National Security Council Secretary-General Chuang Ming-yao, National Security Bureau Director Ting Yu-chow, Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chiou I-jen and Mainland Affairs Council Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen.

Major topics raised at the meeting, according to You, were Taiwan's entry into the WTO, the 2001 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum which will be held in Shanghai in October, cross-Taiwan Strait interaction, improvement of domestic investment environment and protection of Taiwan investors in mainland China.
