Taipei, Feb. 28 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian pledged Wednesday--the 54th anniversary of the Feb. 28 Incident--that the government will adhere to international human rights standards so that similar acts of human rights violation will never happen again.
At a memorial ceremony to mark one of the most tragic periods in Taiwan's history when the Nationalist government suppressed an islandwide uprising with military force in 1947, the dissident-turned-president said the new government will take the responsibility to address the wrongs of the previous administrations.
He said that the government will compensate the remaining victims of the tragedy, provide them with medical and psychological assistance, publish textbooks with the correct descriptions and analyses of this particular page in history and open up related historical archives to the public.
