ROC PRESIDENT GIVES PEP TALK ON ANNUAL SPRING CLEANING

Taipei, Jan. 14 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Sunday that maintaining a clean environment should be a daily act, not something only done during the traditional spring cleaning season, just as one shouldn't be especially hard-working only when a crisis hits.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a government-organized street sweeping and recycling activity that serves as a prelude to the upcoming "national cleaning week" immediately before Chinese New Year, which falls on Jan. 24 this year, Chen urged the public to pay attention to not only the "snow on one's own doorsteps," but also the "snow on one another's rooftops."

Having such an attitude is meant to create a better standard of living for everyone, Chen continued, because "our responsibility is to let our descendants believe that recycling and a respect for nature are `a matter of course,' and that it is impossible to imagine a world without waste sorting."
