President Chen Welcomes Gambian President Hahya Jammeh with Military Honors

Taipei, Jan. 8 (CNA) Republic of The Gambia President Hahya Jammeh arrived in Taiwan Monday noon for a six day visit.

Jammeh and his 25-member entourage was greeted at the airport by Republic of China Foreign Minister Tien Hung-mao. He was welcomed by President Chen Shui-bian Monday afternoon in Taipei with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute.

President said that the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of China re-established full diplomatic relations with each other in 1995. Since then, bilateral relations have greatly improved. By doing so, we have set a very good example for the international society of how two countries, through well-planned international cooperation, can assist each other in the pursuit of political, economic and social advancements.

President Chen said that we have witnessed the continuing success in President Jammeh’s plans on the economic development and social reform. We would like to express our admiration for the outstanding achievements President Jammeh has made and we believe that there must be more to come under His Excellency’s sagacious leadership.

In closing, President said that with the advent of this new millenium, there will be various challenges as well as opportunities ahead of our two countries. However, we firmly believe that through joint efforts and close cooperation, we will be able to enhance the welfare of our two peoples and open a new horizon for our relations.
