Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian expressed his appreciation Sunday for the relations between the Republic of China and Guatemala, describing the Central American nation a true and faithful friend.
Speaking at a reception held at the auditorium of the state-owned Taiwan Salt Company in Tainan County, southern Taiwan, in honor of visiting Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo, Chen said "It is necessary for us to maintain the ROC-Guatemala relationship at its best level."
In response, Portillo assured Chen that ROC-Guatemala relations will be further strengthened and he will continue to dedicate himself to promoting the ties during his present term and afterward.
Chen accompanied Portillo Sunday to tour his native Tainan County and Tainan City which has the sisterhood ties with Zacapa, native town of Portillo.
Chen also hosted a state banquet in the evening in Panchiao, Taipei County in honor of Portillo who arrived in Taiwan Wednesday to participate in the fourth summit of the heads of states and governments of the ROC, Central American nations and the Dominican Republic that wrapped up in Taipei Thursday.
