President Lee Teng-hui this morning, on behalf of the Republic of China, accepts the credentials from the Hon. Bertram L. Charles, the St. Christopher and Nevis' new ambassdor to the ROC.
The ceremony is held at the Office of the President at 10 o'clock. Accompanied by Ms. Wang Chin Shih-In, the St. Christopher's honorable consul-general to the ROC and Mr. Wang Yu-yen, director of the Department of Protocol of the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Charles presents credentials to the President. Mr. Wu Poh-hsiung, secretary-general to the President, and Mr. John Chang, minister of foreign affairs, are also present.
After the ceremony, President Lee points out that the ROC and the St. Christopher and Nevis enjoy longtime friendship and have close cooperative ties. The President hopes that the new ambassador can further strengthen bilateral relationship in the future.
Ambassador Bertram L. Charles tells President Lee that both countries not only share the same goals but also love peace and freedom. He very much looks forward to even closer exchanges between both countries. In addition, he will do his best to support the ROC in the internatioanl society, the new ambassador adds.
Later on, President Lee meets with Prime Minister Denzil Douglas of the St. Christopher and Nevis. The President heartily welcomes the prime minister and wishes to see even closer ties developed through the prime minister's visiting here.
Dr. Douglas congratulates President Lee on his victory in the March 23 presidential election. During the meeting, Dr. Douglas also expresses his appreciation for the hearty welcome which he receives from the government and people of the ROC.
Mr. Wu Poh-hsiung, Mr. John Chang, and Mr. Ding Mou-shih, secretary-general of the ROC National Security Council, are also present at the meeting.
