Taipei, Aug. 22 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Friday sustainable development will be the top guiding principle for Taiwan's future policy planning and infrastructure construction.
Chen made the remarks at the opening of the 2003 Science Week program, organized by the National Science Council to promote scientific education and research. This year's program focuses on challenges to Taiwan's sustainable development.
Noting that Taiwan's beautiful natural environment has been seriously polluted over the past decades due to poor planning and unscrupulous exploitation by some business groups, Chen said such practices must be stopped and remedy measures should be taken to preserve the island's natural ecology.
