President Lee Meets with Fiji President Mara
1996-12-13

President Lee Teng-hui this morning meets with visiting Fiji President and Madam Kamisese Mara and extends his warm welcome to them.

President and Madam Mara, accompanied by several high-ranking Fiji officials, arrived in Taipei on December 12 for a six-day visit though Fiji does not have diplomatic relations with the ROC.

During their meeting, President Lee tells his guests that the ROC has enjoyed longstanding friendship with Fiji and that he believes President Mara's visit will further cement cooperation between the two countries.

Noting that the ROC has created world-acclaimed economic miracle through over four decades of successful development, President Lee says this country is more than willing to share her developmental experience with Fiji, particularly in agricultural R&D, to enhance the well-being of both peoples.

For his part, President Mara expresses his gratitude to President Lee for all the assistance the ROC has extended to Fiji over the past years, adding that he hopes bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened in future.

The guests are accompanied by ROC Foreign Minister John Chang to the Office of the President for the meeting. Also present are Dr. Ding Mou-shih, Secretary-General of the ROC National Security Council, and Mr. Stephen S.F. Chen, Deputy Secretary-General to the President.
