President Lee Teng-hui this afternoon meets with Mr. Rafael Angel Calderon Fournier, former president of the Republic of Costa Rica, and extends a warm welcome to him.
President Lee calls Mr. Calderon a true friend of the ROC and extends sincere appreciation to him for his strenuous efforts at enhancing ROC-Costa Rica relations over the past years even after having stepped down from the presidency in 1994.
President Lee also expresses his hope that bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened through exchange of visits between both countries based on the traditional bonds of friendship.
Mr. Calderon says that he has visited the ROC several times and that each time he witnesses greater progress and prosperity in this country. The great variety and high quality of made-in-Taiwan products have been particularly impressive, he notes.
On a six-day visit to the ROC, Mr. and Mrs. Calderon are accompanied by ROC Vice Foreign Minister Chen Chien-jen and Costa Rican Ambassador Elena Wachong de Storer to the Office of the President for a courtesy call to President Lee. Also present at the meeting are Dr. Ding Mou-shih, Secretary-General of the ROC National Security Council, and Mr. Stephen S.F. Chen, Deputy Secretary-General to the President.
