President Lee Teng-hui this morning meets with Dr. Eduardo Doryan Garron, minister of education of the Republic of Costa Rica, and Mrs. Garron. During the meeting, President Lee extends his warm welcome to the guests and exchanges views on education with them.
Both the President and Minister Garron share the view that it is worthy to invest in education because education as a long-range plan concerns greatly with a nation's future development. President Lee points out that educational development in the ROC has come to the bottleneck in recent years and thus educational reforms are put on top of the government's agenda currently. Given the fact that education needs huge expenditure, educational reforms should be implemented step by step according to priority, the President notes.
On a visit to gain a better understanding of the ROC's senior high and vocational school system, Minister Garron says he is deeply impressed on the vocational education in the ROC during his stay here. It is his belief that the ROC's experience in education will be of much help for Costa Rica when it tackles educational problems, he adds.
Accompanied by Dr. Yang Chaur-shin, ROC vice minister of education, and Mrs. Analia de Stadthagen, councillor of the Embassy of Costa Rica, Minister and Mrs. Garron come to the Office of the President for the meeting. Also present is Mr. Stephen S.F. Chen, deputy secretary-general to the President.
