President Tsai Ing-wen met with a delegation of scholars and experts from the Center for American Progress (CAP), a think tank based in Washington, DC. on the morning of October 16. She thanked the United States for giving Taiwan broad bipartisan support, and explained that Taiwan will continue to uphold its values and beliefs, and remain extremely resilient  to garner the support and cooperation from the international community, including the United States.

President Tsai started her remarks by welcoming Thomas A. Daschle, Chair of the CAP's Board of Directors, leading another delegation to Taiwan. She said that all of her guests have extensive political experience and expertise, and have followed Indo-Pacific issues for a long time, so she was delighted to meet them to exchange ideas.

The United States is Taiwan's most important strategic and trade partner, President Tsai said, and our solid bilateral relations also serve as a cornerstone of stability, prosperity and development in the Indo-Pacific. Over the past two-plus years, Taiwan-US Relations have grown even closer and continue to enjoy strong bipartisan support.

The president noted that just last month, a bipartisan group of four senators introduced the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act of 2018, with strong bipartisan support for bolder moves by the executive branch to help Taiwan secure its diplomatic relations.

President Tsai expressed her appreciation for support from our American friends. She then reiterated her National Day remarks, saying that Taiwan will continue to uphold its values and beliefs, remain extremely resilient to garner the support and cooperation from the international community, including the United States.

The president believes that democracy, freedom and human rights are values Taiwan and the United States share. A recent CAP report proposes many suggestions about how to formulate US foreign policy in which democracy is a core value.

In closing, President Tsai mentioned that in addition to visiting government agencies and think tanks, the guests will also head to National Chengchi University and the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University to interact with our students. She once again welcomed the delegation, and thanked them for traveling so far to share their thoughts and observations on the regional situation as well as creating more opportunities for exchange.
