President Tsai meets Honduran Vice President Olga Alvarado
2019-05-28

During a meeting on the morning of May 28 with a visiting delegation led by Honduran Vice President Olga Alvarado and her husband, President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Honduras for speaking up for Taiwan at the World Health Assembly (WHA). The president also expressed hope that the two countries can continue working hand-in-hand to strengthen the global health network and achieve sustainable development.

In remarks, President Tsai welcomed Vice President Alvarado and her husband on their first visit to Taiwan. Recalling that she had met with Vice President Alvarado last August in Paraguay, the president said she was delighted to host the vice president in Taiwan, and asked her to convey best wishes from Taiwan to President Juan Orlando Hernández.

President Tsai pointed out that Vice President Alvarado has a wealth of experience, and is a model for women's political participation in Honduras. In addition to her many years of speaking out on behalf of the underprivileged, the vice president is widely praised for all she has done to assist youth, indigenous peoples, and Afro-Hondurans. We hope, said the president, to take advantage of this visit to Taiwan by Vice President Alvarado to hold more exchanges about social welfare policy

The president recalled that she led a delegation to Honduras in January of 2017 to learn about the accomplishments of bilateral cooperation projects. In recent years, she stated, cooperation between the two countries has continued to grow closer in fields like medicine and health care, agriculture, education, and science and technology.

Citing the Honduran government's program for the avocado industrial chain as an example, President Tsai mentioned that the state-run Taiwan Agriculture Investment Company established a subsidiary in Honduras this past January. In addition to using technology transfers to help Honduras enhance its avocado production and marketing capabilities, the subsidiary is also promoting an avocado investment project to achieve more cooperation and development. Cooperation between Taiwan and Honduras has also proven that Taiwan has the ability to contribute more to the international community, she added.

President Tsai pointed out that at last week's WHA proceedings, the Honduran representative praised Taiwan as an important partner of Honduras in the field of public health. The president thanked Honduras for speaking up for Taiwan, and expressed hope that the two countries can continue working hand-in-hand to strengthen the global health network and achieve sustainable development.

In closing, President Tsai welcomed Vice President Alvarado and her delegation to Taiwan once again, and wished the delegation a smooth and successful trip.
