Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) expressed President Tsai Ing-wen's congratulations on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to new Liberal Democratic Party President and current Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who was chosen as Japan's 99th prime minister at an extraordinary Diet session held today. President Tsai also sent best wishes to the Japanese government, hoping that under Prime Minister Suga's leadership, government policy will be implemented smoothly and the nation will continue to develop and prosper.
Spokesperson Chang noted that Prime Minister Suga has publicly voiced support for Taiwan numerous times, affirming that Taiwan and Japan share fundamental values like freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The new prime minister has also advocated supporting our participation in international organizations, and is an important international friend of Taiwan. Our two countries interact frequently, and Japan is an important partner for Taiwan. We will continue to both promote diversified cooperation with Japan as well as deepen our friendly partnership, and look forward to working together to advance the wellbeing of people in both countries and maintain prosperous development, peace and stability in our region.
Spokesperson Chang also said that President Tsai wished to thank former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe once again for his support for Taiwan over the years, and expressed sincere hope that he can rest and fully recover soon.
