President Tsai visits Taiwan Technical Mission in Swaziland

2018-04-19

We won't be spending a lot of time at the technical mission today, but I've met the mission chief and other members of the mission, as well as eight young men doing alternative national service here.

I know that our technical mission isn't just involved in agricultural technology, but is also providing other kinds of technology.

Swaziland is 11,000 kilometers away from Taiwan, but we took a direct chartered flight, so it only took 13 and a half hours to get here.

I'm delighted to see all of you, and see that Taiwanese can do so much for a diplomatic ally in a faraway place. Our technical mission has provided a great deal of assistance, even though it doesn't really have a lot of manpower. But I'm sure that working here has given you a great sense of accomplishment.

I just ate some of your yams and pitaya, and they were delicious. Really, even better than Taiwan's. The mission chief told us the climate here is more suitable, with big temperature variations between day and night, so certain crops taste better than Taiwan's.

The main reason I came here today is to listen to your briefings, but even more important, I wanted to thank all of you.

You've all travelled far from home to work and live here, and I hope it will be a significant experience in your life. We'll do all we can to keep you on. Not necessarily here, but keep you on to work with us and do more.

I'm really happy to see young people who are willing to work abroad. When you're young, travel gives you valuable experience, promotes future development, and enriches your life.

I want to give a special thanks to the mission chief for leading this technical mission, and providing a stable work environment where colleagues can develop their strengths and expertise, and young people can work abroad, and experience a different culture.
