President Tsai tours Palau National Congress

First, I want to thank the Members of the Palau Senate and House of Delegates for choosing to meet with us in this icon of democracy—the Capitol Building—and for giving Taiwan this most precious gift—the joint resolution that was read just moments ago.

Taiwan and Palau have much in common. We share Austronesian culture that dates back centuries, and an abundance of marine resources from the Pacific Ocean. And most important, we uphold the core values of democracy and freedom.

Because we harbor the same ideals, Taiwan and Palau have provided mutual support for the past two decades.

I want to express my special gratitude to former President Nakamura for the key role he played in establishing bilateral diplomatic relations. I also want to thank all of our Palauan friends for their longstanding commitment to speaking up for Taiwan in the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and many important regional organizations.

Looking ahead, we face considerable challenges with regard to climate change, economic development, cultural revitalization, and regional peace and stability. Taiwan is ready to work with Palau to make even more contributions to the Pacific region.

Later this year, Taiwan will host the 49th annual meeting of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union (APPU). I sincerely invite Senate President Hokkons Baules and House of Delegates Speaker Sabino Anastacio to lead a parliamentary delegation to join us for this important event.

Once again, I sincerely thank the Palau National Congress for its warm hospitality, and all of you for fully supporting our diplomatic partnership.

Mesulang! Thank you!
