President Tsai attends official welcome ceremony in Nauru and confers Order of Brilliant Jade with Grand Cordon upon President Waqa

Thank you for the warm welcome, Your Excellency President Baron Waqa, and all our friends in Nauru. President Waqa has visited Taiwan each of the last three years. I am very pleased to reciprocate this year by traveling to your beautiful country.

Before embarking on my journey, I saw a welcome message recorded by Your Excellency posted on Facebook by Nauruan media. We deeply appreciate the importance that Nauru attaches to relations with Taiwan, as well as the friendship that you have shown us.

I wish to thank Your Excellency for your kind invitation to visit your beautiful country. And on behalf of the people of Taiwan, it is a great privilege to confer upon you the highest honor of the Republic of China (Taiwan). This represents our most heartfelt gratitude for your outstanding contributions to elevating the bilateral relations between our countries.

President Waqa and Taiwan are "better than best friends", and for many years, Your Excellency and the government of Nauru have spoken up for Taiwan at countless international venues. You have expressed staunch support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, and I was particularly impressed by your words of support for Taiwan at last year's Pacific Islands Forum.

On this occasion, I have led a delegation to Nauru to witness the signing of an agreement on coast guard collaboration. In the future, Taiwan and Nauru will not only engage in joint endeavors on land, in fields such as agriculture, healthcare, talent cultivation, and clean energy. We will also expand our cooperation to search and rescue and law enforcement operations at sea.

Taiwan and Nauru are both members of the vast Pacific Ocean community. We share common democratic values, and jointly safeguard the sustainable development of the marine environment. This is very much in line with the theme of our visit, “Oceans of Democracy.”

I look forward to in-depth discussions with Your Excellency and all of our Nauruan friends on marine and other issues. Thank you once again for the tremendous welcome. Thank you all!
