Vice President Chen attends celebrations marking 20th anniversary of Taiwan-Palau diplomatic ties

Purpose

The year 2019 marked the 20th anniversary of official diplomatic relations between the Republic of Palau and the Republic of China (Taiwan), which were established on December 29, 1999. To highlight the strong alliance between the two countries, as well as the importance that Taiwan places on its diplomatic relationship with Palau, President Tsai Ing-wen designated Vice President Chen Chien-jen as her special envoy to visit Palau from December 28 through 30 and take part in a series of activities to celebrate the occasion.

Vice President Chen's itinerary included a Taiwan-Palau friendship night market, the ROC (Taiwan)-Palau Fishing Derby, a luncheon celebrating the 20th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations, a meeting with Palau President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr., and a welcome banquet hosted by the Palauan government.

This mission of friendship to Palau demonstrated the firm and unwavering ties between Taiwan and Palau. The two countries have mutually supported each other through thick and thin for the past 20 years and look forward to many more years of friendship to come.

Achievements

Vice President Chen, acting as President Tsai's special envoy for this visit, represented the government of Taiwan at activities celebrating the 20th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Palau. Vice President Chen and his wife, together with Director-General of the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Foreign Ministry Baushuan Ger (葛葆萱) and other associated personnel, and accompanied by ROC Ambassador to Palau Wallace M.G. Chow (周民淦), visited a Taiwan-Palau friendship night market, attended the Taiwan-Palau Fishing Derby, and hosted a luncheon celebrating 20 years of diplomatic relations. Many Palauan political figures and citizens participated in these events, effectively promoting the positive image of Taiwan in Palau.

Vice President Chen and his delegation were guests at a banquet hosted by the Palauan government on December 29, where he interacted with Palau Vice President Raynold Oilouch, Minister of State Faustina Rehuher-Marugg, traditional local Palauan leaders, the Senate vice president, and the House of Delegates vice speaker. Before his return to Taiwan on December 30, Vice President Chen also met with Palau President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. and exchanged views about bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern, a testament to the friendly and frequent relations between high-level officials in the two countries.

During their visit to Palau, Vice President Chen and his wife also inspected the Taiwan Technical Mission, the National Slaughterhouse, and a feed mill to see first-hand how Taiwan is helping to develop agriculture and animal husbandry in Palau. When Vice President Chen met with President Remengesau, the two also discussed possibilities for further bilateral cooperation.

During the trip, Vice President Chen and his wife also expressed gratitude to Taiwan's diplomatic personnel in Palau, members of the technical team, and Taiwanese expatriates on behalf of the government for their contributions to Taiwan's diplomatic efforts. The 20th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Palau was an important milestone, and Vice President Chen took the opportunity to thank those who have devoted so much effort to Taiwan-Palau relations.
