President Tsai Ing-wen met on the afternoon of May 30 with Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) Ramon Andres Quinones Rodriguez and Mrs. Quinones, as well as Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UNOV Antonio Roberto Castellanos Lopez and Mrs. Lopez. The president thanked her visitors for their long-standing support for our country's participation in international organizations and activities.
In remarks, President Tsai stated that Taiwan has always taken a pragmatic attitude toward its participation in the UN and other international organizations. She thanked our country's diplomatic allies for the strong support they've shown by speaking out on behalf of Taiwan at many important international venues, including the General Debate of the UN General Assembly and the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
President Tsai pointed out that our country's delegation to this year's World Health Assembly returned to Taiwan from Geneva on May 27. In addition to holding over 40 bilateral talks to discuss technical issues in the field of medicine and health with important international medical organizations as well as many other nations, including our diplomatic allies, the delegation also took active part in the global health system.
The president remarked that each administration of Taiwan must work for diplomatic participation and success. As a member of the international community, she said, Taiwan must responsibly contribute to regional peace and international order. Insisting on dialogue and communication is the most important key to achieve our goals, the president stated.
President Tsai also mentioned that Taiwan is currently working to join important regional international economic and trade regimes. Our country is willing to share resources, talent, and markets with other countries in order to expand the economy and ensure the effective use of resources. In line with this spirit, our government has adopted a "New Southbound Policy." Taiwan is very willing to engage in exchanges and cooperation with other countries in such areas as science and technology, culture, and economic and trade relations.
The president reiterated that our sincere friendship and cooperation with diplomatic allies will continue to develop vigorously and move forward in the future. She also expressed hope that our diplomatic allies will continue to speak out on behalf of Taiwan at international venues, and that they will support our country's pragmatic participation in important international organizations, including the UN system, as well as related conferences, mechanisms, and activities.
