On the morning of October 17, President Tsai Ing-wen proceeded to the Thailand Trade and Economic Office (TTEO) in Taipei to extend condolences on the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, also known as Rama IX.

After King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away on October 13, President Tsai promptly instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue a formal message of condolences from Taiwan to the people of Thailand. She then went personally on October 17 to the TTEO in the company of Minister of Foreign Affairs David T. Lee (李大維) and the TTEO's Executive Director Piroon Laismit to pay her respects before a portrait photo of King Bhumibol.

During a reign of over 70 years, said the president, King Bhumibol exercised wise and compassionate leadership and was greatly beloved among the Thai people. He led the country through a stable transformation into a modern state, and was deeply respected in the international community for his outstanding contributions. Now that the king has passed away, the people of Thailand, who held him in great esteem, are experiencing profound grief, and the international community joins them in mourning the king's passing.
