President Tsai meets delegation from US-based Hudson Institute
President Tsai Ing-wen met on the morning of October 23 with a delegation from the Hudson Institute, a think tank based in Washington, DC. The president emphasized that Taiwan needs to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and develop its defense industry, and will therefore continue to increase its military budget, strengthen military training, and raise morale in the armed forces.
In remarks, President Tsai first welcomed the Hudson Institute delegation back to Taiwan, noting that the institute has been quite active over the past year, organizing several forums and lectures to discuss issues including Taiwan-US relations, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and regional developments. The Hudson Institute's analyses and research, she said, have inspired fresh thinking about Taiwan-US relations.
The president stated that Taiwan-US relations remain stable and close. Taiwan maintains close cooperative ties with the American Institute in Taiwan and officials in Washington, DC, especially regarding economic and trade relations, regional security, and Taiwan's international space.
President Tsai stressed that Taiwan needs to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and spur development of its defense industry. As president, she said, one of her highest priorities is strengthening the country's defense capabilities. The government will therefore continue to increase its military budget, strengthen military training, and raise morale in the armed forces.
And finally, the president stated that the government has already put a lot of effort into these tasks, but much remains to be done. She then expressed hope that the Hudson Institute will provide suggestions on Taiwan's national defense, especially regarding military reform and how to enhance cooperation for regional peace and stability.
The delegation was headed by Hudson Institute President and CEO Kenneth R. Weinstein.
