On the morning of November 8, President Tsai Ing-wen met with a delegation led by Mr. Youri Latorture, President of the Senate of the Republic of Haiti. Besides offering her guests a sincere welcome after their long journey, President Tsai also expressed hope that the existing partnership will continue to develop by working together on various cooperative projects.

In remarks, President Tsai stated that she was very happy to meet with Senate President Latortue and the other parliamentarians, offered a warm welcome, and said she hoped they would gain a better understanding of Taiwan and engage in further exchanges.

President Tsai pointed out that Taiwan and Haiti interact frequently. Two weeks before, she had met with Haitian Ambassador Rachel Coupaud and congratulated the Haitian Embassy for winning a 2017 Golden Merchants Award. This achievement shows that Haiti places great importance on Taiwan and is actively promoting bilateral economic and trade relations. President Tsai expressed her great appreciation for the embassy's assistance and commitment.

The president further pointed out that besides economic and trade relations, over the past few years, cooperation between Taiwan and Haiti in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, education, public health, and healthcare has been very successful. This visit by the Senate President Latortue and his delegation will further boost parliamentarian exchanges between the two countries, she said.

Haiti has also provided long-term support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Civil Aviation Organization. In particular, during the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly in September of this year, Haitian President Jovenel Moise personally spoke up on Taiwan's behalf, demonstrating the friendship between the two countries, and President Tsai expressed her heartfelt gratitude for that gesture.

President Tsai emphasized that Taiwan and Haiti have been diplomatic allies for over 60 years, and are staunch partners. She expressed hope that the two countries will continue to enhance exchanges and, through a variety of cooperation projects, continually upgrade their partnership. The president also said that she looked forward to having President Moise visit Taiwan to further deepen the bilateral friendship. She then asked Senate President Latortue to convey her greetings and an invitation to President Moise. At the same time, she wished the delegation a smooth and successful journey.
