Presidential Office offers gratitude for US Vice President Pence's strong expression of support for Taiwan
Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) expressed gratitude today for Vice President Mike Pence's expression of staunch US support for Taiwan in a speech at the Wilson Center. In that speech, Vice President Pence expressed concern about China's actions in the international community. He also referred to Taiwan several times, praising Taiwan's democratic achievements and concern for regional security.
Spokesperson Chang said that the United States has always been Taiwan's most important partner in the international community. As both sides celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act this year, the US government has continued to support Taiwan through concrete action. The warmth and support of the United States has been felt even more in light of China's unrelenting pressure on our diplomatic relations and attempts to isolate Taiwan internationally.
Spokesperson Chang also stated that just as Vice President Pence said, the US supports "a more just, secure, and peaceful world." We believe that this should be the goal of all our partners in the international community who share the values of freedom and democracy. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue working closely with the US government and other like-minded countries in the region to safeguard regional security and prosperity based on our shared beliefs in freedom and democracy. We will resolutely take on the role of a defender of regional peace and prosperity to jointly contribute to cross-strait and regional security and wellbeing.
