Honduran President Hernández congratulates President Tsai on her re-election
Honduran President Hernández congratulates President Tsai on her re-election
2020-05-26

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen on the morning of May 26 by telephone. Presidential Office Spokesperson Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said that President Hernández, in addition to congratulating President Tsai on her re-election, emphasized that he is a faithful friend to Taiwan, and reiterated that bilateral ties between the two countries are firm and harmonious. The two heads of state also exchanged views on matters of shared concern. President Tsai was accompanied during the phone call by Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), while President Hernández was accompanied by Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs Lisandro Rosales and Presidential Priorities and Public Innovation promoting Digital Government Minister Marco Midence.

Spokesperson Chang added that President Hernández, speaking on behalf of the Honduran government and people, extended heartfelt thanks to Taiwan for its long-standing support for Honduras on many fronts, and expressed hope that — with President Tsai just beginning her second term and he himself half-way through his second term — the two countries would jointly respond to global climate change and international conditions and further enhance bilateral cooperation. He also said he hoped Taiwan would continue sharing its valuable public health information and experience to help Honduras fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spokesperson Chang also said that President Tsai thanked President Hernández for taking the time to call her with congratulations on her re-election. She further stated that Taiwan stands willing and able to share its public health experience and provide disease control supplies to help Honduras fight COVID-19, so that Hondurans can resume their normal lives as soon as possible. President Tsai indicated to President Hernández that COVID-19 is affecting economies throughout the world, and Taiwan will cooperate with Honduras to get through the crisis together.

Spokesperson Chang stated that Taiwan-Honduras relations are stable, and that this marked the third telephone call between the two countries' heads of state. When President Tsai won election to her first term on January 16, 2016, President Hernández congratulated her via video call that same evening, and President Tsai similarly congratulated President Hernández via video call after he won re-election on December 27, 2017. President Hernández had already recorded a congratulatory message following President Tsai's re-election, and offering congratulations again today via telephone clearly demonstrates the strong friendship between the two heads of state.
