President Tsai marks 80 years of ROC (Taiwan)-Honduras diplomatic ties

On April 9, President Tsai Ing-wen recorded a video to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Honduras. Noting that Taiwan and Honduras are important trading partners as well as loyal allies, President Tsai said she hoped to further deepen our bilateral partnership, work together to contribute to the international community, and collaborate to improve the wellbeing of citizens in both our countries.

A translation of the president’s remarks follows:

Today is the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Republic of China and the Republic of Honduras. I am honored to offer my best wishes on behalf of the people of Taiwan, and to join all of you in celebrating this momentous occasion.

Honduras is a staunch ally of Taiwan. Over the past several years, our nations have steadily expanded exchanges across all facets of our relationship, and our bilateral trade has continued to grow year-on-year.

Honduras has turned its former trade deficit with Taiwan into a trade surplus, and exports many high-quality products to Taiwan.

For example, Honduras has already become the main source of whiteleg shrimp sold in Taiwan. And Honduran melons, coffee, and cocoa can be found in restaurants and homes across our country, where they are beloved by all Taiwanese. I myself very much enjoy Honduran coffee, and often give it as a gift.

Taiwan and Honduras are not just important trade partners, but also mutually supportive allies. Over the past year, Taiwan has stood with Honduras to address the global pandemic and hurricane relief, donating supplies and sharing experiences that helped us overcome these challenges together.

In the future, we will continue to cooperate on post-disaster reconstruction so that the people of Honduras can resume normal lives as soon as possible.

We deeply value our friendship with Honduras, and thank President Hernandez and the Honduran government for speaking out in support of Taiwan at a range of international events.

We look forward to further deepening our partnership with Honduras, working together to contribute to the international community, and collaborating to improve the wellbeing of citizens in our countries. May Taiwan and Honduras enjoy a prosperous future, and may our alliance grow ever stronger.
