On the morning of March 21, President Tsai Ing-wen met with Dr. Richard Bush, nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. President Tsai expressed appreciation for the broad support Taiwan has received from the United States, before exchanging views with Dr. Bush on regional developments and economic issues.

President Tsai said that Dr. Bush is a good friend of Taiwan, adding that whenever the two of them meet, he always provides important insights on Taiwan-US relations and the regional landscape. The president also said she was glad to welcome Dr. Bush back to Taiwan now that the pandemic has subsided.

Expressing her appreciation to the US for supporting Taiwan, President Tsai noted the bipartisan consensus on this support. In response, Dr. Bush acknowledged that the US has indeed long supported Taiwan and stated that its interactions with Taiwan have become more frequent, but that at the same time, China is exerting ever-greater pressure on Taiwan. He also thanked President Tsai for her leadership and her efforts to maintain balance in the US-Taiwan-China relationship.

President Tsai and Dr. Bush then exchanged views on regional developments and economic issues.
