Regarding the passage of a motion by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom on November 28 affirming that United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan, Presidential Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) expressed sincere gratitude to the UK Parliament and government for supporting Taiwan. The spokesperson said that the motion expressly refutes China’s distortion of the content of UNGA Resolution 2758 and denounces Beijing’s attempts to restrict Taiwan’s international space. The motion emphasizes that Taiwan is a member of the international community and should enjoy opportunities for fair and meaningful participation, for which our government expresses its gratitude, the spokesperson said.

Spokesperson Kuo stated that the parliamentary motion not only demonstrates the international community’s correct understanding of the original intent of UNGA Resolution 2758, but also takes a strong position in support of Taiwan’s democratic values and international participation. She emphasized that Taiwan is ready to stand together with democratic partners to defend the core values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights that we share.

Spokesperson Kuo remarked that legislative bodies in Australia, the Netherlands, and Canada, and the European Parliament have all recently passed related motions expressing the high importance that they attach to this issue, while jointly rejecting the Chinese government’s misinterpretation of Taiwan’s status. The people and government of Taiwan express their sincere thanks, she said, and Taiwan will continue to stand together with the international democratic community and contribute to democracy and prosperity around the world.
