On the morning of December 27, President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez on his re-election via videoconference, and emphasized that Taiwan and Honduras will continue to promote economic and trade cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations.
During the video call President Tsai first congratulated President Hernandez on his re-election, then expressed sincere good wishes on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of China.
President Tsai stated that Honduras is entering a new phase. President Hernandez is the first president to be re-elected since the current Honduran constitution entered into force. The people have affirmed his administration by giving him this electoral victory, President Tsai said, and she expressed confidence that the Great National Dialogue he is leading will transform conflict into consensus and create an entirely new Honduras.
President Tsai said that Honduras has steadily progressed and developed under President Hernandez's leadership, and that Taiwan-Honduras relations have been continuously upgraded thanks to his strong support.
President Tsai said that since taking office, she has had many opportunities to meet with President Hernandez, and noted that exchanges between the two countries—including reciprocal state visits and continued implementation of bilateral cooperative projects—have become ever closer over the past year.
President Tsai emphasized that Taiwan's government will continue to promote economic and trade cooperation, increase purchases of Honduran agricultural products, encourage even more Taiwanese business people to invest there, and actively participate in Honduran infrastructure projects so that bilateral cooperative relations can grow ever closer.
President Tsai once again thanked Honduras for speaking out on behalf of Taiwan in international venues over the past few years. She added that Taiwan treasures this friendship, and hopes to work with President Hernandez to promote bilateral diplomatic ties.
In closing, President Tsai also expressed sincere grief over the recent accident involving President Hernandez's elder sister. She recalled meeting his sister at the Basilica of Suyapa on a visit to Honduras, and said that her enthusiasm had made a deep impression. President Tsai extended her condolences, while also asking that President Hernandez, his family and friends take care of themselves, and continue to work for Honduras' future.
